Teams are given the next checkpoint coordinates and are told to get their within a pre-set time. If they get to the checkpoint within the pre-set time, they will be given a number of points. For every minute it takes them to get there in excess of the pre-set time, the team will lose points.

There are usually 6-8 checkpoints on the hike, with a maximum 400 points that can be gained.

The length of the hike is approximately 15 miles.

Hike Challenges

At some checkpoints, there will be some fun challenges where guile, dexterity, cunning and intelligence will be rewarded with a maximum of an extra 200 points towards their total

Previous challenges include the bushtucker challenge, hay bale races, 4x4 pulling, and water challenges.

Bike

The next day, the teams will set out on the bike orienteering challenge. There are usually 3-4 checkpoints, and between the checkpoints, there are questions along the way that earn points. The total number of points that can be achieved is 400 points.

The length of the bike is between 20-25 miles, although its not necessary to go to every checkpoint - however the The team is issued with a grid reference to advise them of the location of the first checkpoint. At certain checkpoints challenges will need to be completed to gain points towards the overall total. You are also given the coordinates for the next checkpoint. It is up to the team to decide which route is the easiest to get to the checkpoint. As a team you are given a certain amount of time to get from checkpoint to checkpoint. There are a certain number of points available if you arrive at a checkpoint within the allocated time. One point per minute is deducted for every minute over the allocated time.

Round Table stewards will be at every checkpoint where you need to register your arrival. The clock will “stop” when you arrive to allow you to complete the challenge and then will “start” again as you move onto the next stage. All the marks and stop and start times are recorded by the stewards on sheets and then the sheets are returned to the scorer at the end where the results are calculated.

If a team member is injured or feels that they cannot continue, return to the last checkpoint or proceed to the next, which ever is closest. It is important that at least one other person escorts the injured person. Do not leave them to fend for themselves. Transportation and medical assistance will be available for that person. If at all possible please also ring back to the control centre to advise about the injury. The whole team must arrive across the finish line together and the last man will stop the clock.

The Rules

Each team is made up of 4 tablers/ 41 ers / Ladies Circle / guests or if 4 people from the same table are not available, every effort will be made to make up a team of 4 from various other tables that have more than 4 people for the weekend.

The Hike and Bike Race is one event. Therefore the same 4 competitors who make up a team and hike on the Saturday, must bike on the Sunday.

Each team member is responsible for providing their own bicycle suitable for use in an off-road situation and is also responsible for ensuring that the bicycle is in a fully working condition and must have a safety helmet.

The organising team is not responsible for any damage caused to personal equipment used by participants over the weekend.

Each team is required to carry a basic first aid kit throughout the weekend, but full first aid facilities and full medical back up is provided at the Hostel all weekend.

The results and positions of the teams are based on timings and points gained throughout the courses over the two days.

Every effort is taken to ensure that the timings are accurate and the results entered by the marshals on the course are deemed correct and therefore these results are used for the final scores.

Current standings will be announced at the end of day one and final results announced at the end of the cycling on day two.

Timings for the hike will be based on the last team member back at the hostel. (You should stay together as a team and walk at the speed of the slowest team member).

The timing for the cycle on day two is based on the third team member to cross the finish line. This does allow for one team member to drop out, but only at a checkpoint or on the final run back to the designated finish point.

The competition is undertaken in the spirit of RTBI and NALC. Participants are reminded that, whilst the event is obviously competitive and a competitive instinct is to be applauded, any infringement of the rules in an effort to attain a better position for a Team will result in the

Organisers taking action against the Team as a whole. In particular, where the Organisers decide unfair tactics have been operated the Organisers have the right to disqualify, deduct points or penalise the full Team.

Unfair tactics include, but are not restricted to:

Having additional cyclists within the team,
Slip-streaming
The use of support vehicles,
Having additional bicycles available if mechanical failure occurs.

If a team is considered to have used any unfair tactics or deemed to have had additional help in any way then the organisers have the right to disqualify, deduct points or penalise the full team
